The Great British Wool Revival
As a follow on from the pilot launch of Fashion Roundtable’s wool programme in 2022, after vast amounts of qualitative and quantitative research and conversations with key stakeholders came the launch of The Great British Wool Revival, an open source tool that connects farmers, designers, makers and industry together to join the dots and make traceable British wool more accessible in fashion supply chains from farm right through to final product.
Four organisations have come together to make The Great British Wool Revival possible: The project is directed and run by Fashion Roundtable and is written and researched by The Wool Library. It has been funded by YOOX NET-A-PORTER as part of its Modern Artisan programme for 2024, a pioneering talent initiative to train emerging designers and makers in partnership with The King's Foundation at their headquarters at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland - where conversations around using locally reared sheep for wool began.
We identified many of the current gaps in the market, with many designers and makers wanting to work with British wool but not knowing who to contact and how to make this possible. With the support of The Great British Wool Revival, this will help to break those barriers to entry; from a step by step guide to building your own supply chain to a terminology and glossary page, everything you need to know is covered to ensure that both designers and farmers feel supported throughout the production process. Acting as a hub for sharing knowledge and resources, this is an on-going open source which will be constantly updated and adapted to ensure that it stays accessible and supportive to all.
