Dear [Insert your MP’s name in here, which you can find in this link],
As the UK hosts COP26, the ethical and environmental impacts of the climate crisis are on everyone’s minds. The industry I work in, fashion, generates over £35 billion for the UK economy and employs almost 1million workers across manufacturing, retail, creative and marketing careers. If the global fashion industry was a nation state, it would be the seventh largest global economy.
Fashion has been a part of the problem in its business practices and complex supply chain, and now it is seeking to be a part of the solution, with an open letter published recently, to our world’s leaders asking them to seize this exciting opportunity, unite and take action towards greater transparency and creative solutions.
We asked the world’s leaders to address these 5 core points:
1) Collective action to achieve net zero emissions by no later than 2050
2) Resourcefulness in waste elimination
3) Increase responsibility by businesses towards their global supply chains
4) Support skills development in education to encourage children to learn the necessary skills to make, repair and reuse their clothes
5) Frame any solutions to the climate emergency around business models which shift the focus from profit and loss, to a just transition towards the well-being economy
As my MP, I am asking for your support by contacting George Eustice MP, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, requesting that he meet with the leading signatories of the open letter after COP26 to offer sustainable solutions and insight opportunities for achieving these ambitious goals. This meeting can be arranged via admin@fashionroundtable.co.uk who would coordinate the meeting.
Please keep me updated on next steps. This is the most important issue of our time and as my elected representative I am sure you share my concerns at this pivotal moment and will do all that you can to help my request.
Yours sincerely,
